In 1985, the Rodriguez family, primarily engaged in agriculture and livestock on these lands, faced a grave predicament. A formidable Jaguar had been preying on their cows and horses, leaving behind half-consumed carcasses and striking terror with each new attack. In just two months, this relentless predator claimed the lives of 30 cows and 4 horses on Don Aurelio's property and neighboring farms. Despite the efforts of more than 25 people on several hunting expeditions, the Jaguar continued to elude capture.

Then, one fateful day, Don Aurelio and three companions set out into the forest with their trusty dogs and weapons, embarking on a relentless pursuit of 'El Tigre.' After an hour-long chase, they succeeded in bringing down the elusive predator. It is this triumphant event that inspired the name 'El Tigre Waterfalls.'

Today, Don Aurelio and his family have cultivated a profound awareness of conservation's importance. Recognizing their role as stewards of the land, they have dedicated 80% of their farm to reforestation efforts. Furthermore, they actively participate in a vital project aimed at safeguarding the region's wild cat population in Monteverde, working diligently to prevent further attacks.

Harmony for Pumas and Farmers: Safeguarding Monteverde's Ecosystem

El Grito del Puma y del Ganadero, which translates to "The Cry of the Puma and the Farmer," represents an environmental initiative born out of a shared mission to protect the wild cats and farmers in the Monteverde region. In recent times, we've witnessed an upsurge in wild cat attacks on cows and other livestock, causing substantial financial losses for these farmers and jeopardizing the survival of these animals due to illegal hunting activities.

Our primary objective with this project is to empower farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to prevent these attacks and manage their farms sustainably. We've collaborated with international experts to develop cutting-edge anti-predatory techniques. Additionally, we've garnered the support and expertise of organizations such as Panthera CR and received government assistance through SINAC (The National System of Conservation Areas of Costa Rica).

To fund our mission and protect both the wild cats and the livelihoods of local farmers, we'll be collecting and overseeing donations through the Monteverde Community Fund. Our vision is to foster a deeper understanding of coexisting peacefully with wildlife and to ensure their protection. When making a donation, please specify your support for "Saving the Wild Cats." Together, we can make a significant impact on the well-being of these animals and the local community.
